National Advisory Council on Drug Abuse
F. Xavier Castellanos, M.D., has been appointed to the National Advisory Council on Drug Abuse. This Council serves a crucial role in advising the National Institute on Drug Abuse in identifying, reviewing, and supporting scientific research. (July 2008)

Behavioral Science Early Career Achievement Award
Jean-Marie Bruzzese, Ph.D., was voted the recipient of the American Thoracic Society Assembly on Behavioral Science Early Career Achievement Award. This award is given to the individual who has made the most outstanding scientific contributions relevant to behavioral and social science regarding lung diseases, critical illness, or sleep disorders early in his or her career. With more than 18,000 members, the American Thoracic Society (ATS) is the leading international, professional and scientific society for respiratory, critical care and sleep medicine. The award was be presented to Dr. Bruzzese at the ATS international meeting in May. (March 25, 2008)
Laughlin Fellow for the American College of Psychiatrists
The American College of Psychiatrists has announced the selection of Karen Ron-Li Liaw, M.D., NYU Child Study Center Resident, as a Laughlin Fellow. Named after College founder, Henry P. Laughlin, M.D., the Fellowship program was launched in 1976 to recognize outstanding accomplishments by psychiatry residents in the United States and Canada. Each year, The College selects ten residents deemed most likely to make a significant future contribution to the field of psychiatry. (January 2008)

Founder and Director of NYU Child Study Center Honored at Annual AACAP Ceremonies
The American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry (AACAP) has awarded Harold S. Koplewicz, M.D., the Irving Philips Award for Prevention, its highest honor, for his dedication and outstanding achievements in the field of child and adolescent psychiatry. This award recognizes a child and adolescent psychiatrist and Academy member who has made significant contributions in a lifetime career or single seminal work to the prevention of mental illness in children and adolescents.
Dr. Koplewicz founded the NYU Child Study Center in 1997 with a mission, based on his own vision, to improve child mental health by expanding scientific knowledge of child and adolescent disorders, delivering evidence-based clinical care, and translating and disseminating new scientifically sound information to mental health professionals, pediatricians, educators, parents and policy makers. Under the leadership of Dr. Koplewicz, the NYU Child Study Center is now recognized as a world-renowned center for child and adolescent psychiatric care.
As Senior Vice President and Vice Dean for External Affairs of the NYU Medical Center, Chair of the Department of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry and Director of the Department of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry at Bellevue Hospitals Center, Dr. Koplewicz spearheads multiple aspects of prevention, research and treatment. In addition, his leadership as Director of the Nathan S. Kline Institute for Psychiatric Research (NKI), has resulted in a $10 million allocation for capital improvements to NKI in Governor Spitzer's budget as well as funds for 15 new research scientists in child and adolescent mental health. Dean's Honors Day
Rachel Klein, Ph.D., became the first Fascitelli Family Professor of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry at Dean's Honors Day. The Fascitelli Family Professorship is the 7th endowed professorship in our Department. (October 2, 2007)
